Gordon Cooper UFO Sightings

1957-05-03 · Edwards Air Force Base, California, USA · US
Sourcing status: Sourced and not flagged as disputed (see Sources section below for the 2 citations this entry is based on).

While stationed at Edwards AFB, future Mercury astronaut Gordon Cooper oversaw a camera crew that filmed a metallic, saucer-shaped object land using a tripod gear, hover, and shoot away at high speed. The film was supposedly forwarded to higher command in Washington D.C. and never seen again. The event carries immense weight due to the unimpeachable credibility of the witness: Cooper was one of the original Mercury Seven astronauts and held a distinguished USAF flight record. He testified publicly about the incident multiple times before his death in 2004 and submitted a statement to the United Nations in 1985 calling for an official investigation into UFO phenomena. The film has never resurfaced, but the case is treated in UAP literature as a high-credibility unresolved military sighting.
