Dozens of witnesses across South Yorkshire and Derbyshire reported a low-flying aircraft, a triangular object, and an explosion or flash on the night of 24 March 1997, followed by two recorded sonic booms. A search involving RAF helicopters and over 150 mountain rescue volunteers lasted more than 15 hours and found no wreckage. An MP raised the case in the House of Commons in 1998; the MoD said it held no record of the sonic events.
