Captain and son of Learjet founder William P. Lear. CIA-contract pilot during the 1970s-80s. Promoted detailed and extreme claims about alien bases, abductions, and cover-ups beginning in the late 1980s.

Background

John Lear was a highly accomplished civilian pilot, former CIA contract pilot, and the son of the inventor of the Learjet. In the late 1980s, he became a major proponent of the dark hypothesis of UAP, publicly alleging that the government had signed treaties with malevolent extraterrestrials involving human abductions. Lear's key contribution was bridging his credible aviation background with extreme conspiracy theories, acting as a catalyst for bringing Bob Lazar's claims to the public. He compiled and disseminated massive amounts of information alleging a vast, lethal cover-up spanning multiple government agencies. His controversial assertions heavily shaped the paranoid aesthetic of 1990s UFO culture.
