American author and researcher who argues that NASA's Viking Orbiter photographs of the Cydonia region of Mars depict artificial structures indicating an ancient Martian civilization. He founded The Enterprise Mission in 1992 and co-authored Dark Mission: The Secret History of NASA (2007). A former CBS News science adviser during the Apollo program.

Background

Richard Charles Hoagland was born on April 25, 1945, and served as a CBS News science adviser during the Apollo lunar landings before developing his Cydonia hypothesis. He gained a broad audience through The Monuments of Mars (1987). In 1992 he founded The Enterprise Mission to pursue research into alleged extraterrestrial artifacts on the Moon and Mars. He co-authored Dark Mission (2007) with Mike Bara.
